The Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), in collaboration with the State Climate Office of North Carolina and the Geospatial and Technology Management Office (GTM) of the Division of Emergency Management, is hosting a one day North Carolina Sensor Workshop. The goal of this workshop is to bring local, state and federal organizations as well as universities together to make users aware of the available sensor data in the state and discuss ideas on how to assemble this data together for easier access.

The workshop will include two main parts:
  1. Current state of sensors in North Carolina: A summary of sensor networks in North Carolina will be presented based on a sensor inventory collected in preparation for the workshop by the sponsoring agencies. This inventory will allow agencies in North Carolina to be aware of what other agencies have deployed so as to encourage data sharing and to avoid duplicate deployments. Also, it will provide NOAA with information as to what sensors are in the state that could be utilized for HMT-SE (hmt.noaa.gov).

  2. How to accumulate this sensor data for widespread use across North Carolina: Discussions on how the compilation of various organizations’ data would benefit users throughout the state and how this compilation could be accomplished will follow the status report session. One method that will be discussed to compile the data is through a collaborative project between RENCI and the State Climate Office of North Carolina called the North Carolina Sensor Data Bus (SDB). The SDB is a new project designed to bring as much sensor data as possible in North Carolina together into one database. This data will then be available for many uses, including data assimilation for models and access to archived and real-time data that can be viewed through a web portal.
It is anticipated that the outcome of this workshop will result in the identification and mapping of all sensor resources being used to collect environmental data as well as the initiation of the development of a strategic plan for leveraging present and future sensor funding and placement to better distribute the data statewide.
